Oral History for the 21st  Century

“Oral History for the 21st Century” is a two-day symposium that brings together a distinguished and diverse group of experts to share information on techniques, strategies, and principles of producing successful oral history projects.

The first day, November 12 (Oklahoma City Zoo), will provide sessions on techniques and strategies for conducting productive interviews, followed by an afternoon presentation by Wes Fryer with the “Celebrate Oklahoma Voices” project on ways to incorporate oral histories, photographs, documents, and music into dynamic video presentations.  Keynote speaker Donald H. Ritchie, Historian for the U.S. Senate and author of “Doing Oral History:  A Practical Guide,” will share insights into the evolution of oral history and trends developing in the digital area.

The second day, November 13 (Oklahoma History Center), will focus on “lessons learned” and successful case studies of oral history projects, including the development of cookbooks, exhibits, websites, organizational histories, and more.  Mary Larson, the newly appointed director of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Project at Oklahoma State University, will provide a keynote on “The Marriage of Oral History and the Web.”

The symposium's concluding session will discuss new approaches to capturing oral histories in Oklahoma. Ideas include establishing of a formal clearinghouse to track current and proposed oral history projects, providing training programs, and identifying funding sources.

Other presenters are Jennifer Paustenbaugh, Tanya Finchum, and Juliana Nykolaiszyn of Oklahoma State University, Larry O’Dell and Jennifer Day with the Oklahoma History Center Research Department and Patricia Loughlin with the University of Central Oklahoma.
